A Foot & Gait Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of how your feet interact with the ground and how that movement affects your ankles, knees, hips, and spine. Led by our seasoned foot specialist and technician, this assessment goes far beyond a basic “foot scan.” We analyze your biomechanics and joint function to identify the root cause of your discomfort.
During your visit, we look at how all 26 bones of the foot – including the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges – move through each phase of your step, and how smoothly that motion transfers up the kinetic chain. This in-depth understanding forms the foundation for designing precise, 3D printed custom orthotics that support your natural gait, reduce strain, and improve overall comfort.
We also encourage you to bring the shoes you wear daily and the footwear you plan to use with your orthotics. Your shoes reveal important information about your gait and pressure patterns, and we’re happy to discuss orthopedic footwear options if you’re curious.
What We Assess, in addition to 3D Foot Scanning:
During your session, we perform an in-depth, post-graduate level evaluation that includes:
- Foot structure & mechanics: How the 26 bones of your feet load, move, and support your arches.
- Orthopaedic function: Joint mobility, stability, rigidity, and leg length relationships.
- Gait patterns: Pronation/supination and how your feet transition through each step.
- Neurological influence: Balance, coordination, and cerebellar effects on foot posture.
- Footwear: Wear patterns, support level, and suitability for custom orthotics.
- Additional assessment varies depending on specific symptoms and conditions.
Who Should Book an Assessment?
You should consider a professional assessment if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent Foot Pain: Including plantar fasciitis, bunions, heel spurs, or general arch soreness.
- Unexplained Knee or Back Pain: Often, pain in the upper body is caused by “flat feet” or poor shock absorption at the ground level.
- Occupational Strain: Individuals who spend long hours on their feet and suffer from daily fatigue or “tenseness.”
- Athletes & Runners: Anyone looking to improve performance, prevent injury, or seeking custom support for high-impact activities.
- Post-Injury Recovery: If you are recovering from a back injury or surgery and need to ensure your walking pattern is helping, not hindering, your healing.
What Happens After the Assessment?
- Develop a Personalized Scan Report: We explain the findings of your assessment, so you understand the “why” behind your pain.
- Manufacture Custom Orthotics in our Edmonton lab: We use precision 3D technology to create orthotics tailored to your exact foot structure and lifestyle needs.
- Create a Recovery Plan: We may recommend specific adjustments or therapies—such as cold laser or soft tissue work—to complement your new orthotics.
- Monitor Progress: We provide ongoing re-examinations to ensure your gait is improving and your pain is diminishing.
